John Balman
John was born in Norwich in 1964 and started painting professionally in 2015 after a successful career as an architect. His paintings capture a sense of stillness that comes from compositional balance and careful use of complimentary colour combinations.
The artwork explores the passing of time through light and shade and the physical act of painting itself, ‘the brush moves far slower than the mouse’. The viewer is invited to pause and enter an alternate world of calmness and settlement.
The finished still life paintings have a rich and immersive atmosphere reminiscent of the Dutch tradition yet they possess a modern quality where less is often more.
John has held an individual show annually at Beverley Minster since 2017 and exhibited at Anteros Gallery in Norwich and Salt Gallery and Eastgate Studio in Beverley.
