David Gilbert
1928-2016
The Studio Collection of Art and Sculpture of the late David Gilbert
"David Gilbert (1928-2016), principally a woodcarver, crossed the boundaries of art and craft.
In the 1960s, he exhibited thought-provoking depictions of the human figure alongside beautifully carved bowls and furniture.
He taught, often in challenging circumstances, establishing a creative workshop at the Cotswold Community for boys suffering from severe psychological disturbance, and initiating many artistic, educational and community projects while living on the Isle of Man.
through sculpture, drawings and woodcuts he explored the human condition - in all its complexity and fragility.
If his work is currently unfamiliar, this book demonstrates why it matters, and why it remains of value to those who collect it, see it in exhibitions, or encounter it in the community."
Quote from Judith LeGrove's book: David Gilbert, Woodcarver, Community Artist, Witness.
The David Gilbert Art Trust was established in 2011 to look after, for the long term, all the work made over half a century by David Gilbert and to explore the possibilities for enabling it to be more widely seen and known.
