David Campbell
David was born in Herefordshire. Educated in Hertfordshire, Lebanon and Edinburgh. He studied Fine Art Edinburgh (70-77) and at the Royal College of Art, London (78-81). He worked in decorative faux finishes and as Art Director in the music industry (Simply Red, Paul Weller, Pasadenas, Dead or Alive, Terry Hall…), (1982-90). Designer of furniture, jewellery, fashion accessories (from 1990).
David divides his time between a traditional village house in a remote area of the Peloponnese, Greece and his studio in a Victorian town house in the centre of York. His work has consistently been informed by a love of the natural environment, whilst acknowledging the human presence. Within this context, he has explored the nature of mark-making and the ways and means of creating complex surfaces. Past work has been concerned with botanical forms, the flora and geology of a particular valley in the Dales; now his primary inspiration is drawn from the area around his home in Greece. Here, as well as the flora, the iconography in medieval church painting, the geological strata and the detritus of more recent history all play their part.
A regular participant in York Open Studios and worked on private sales and commissions (2008- present).
