Fragmented Beauty:

An Introduction to Medieval Islamic Ceramics

Dr Richard McClary is a Reader in Islamic Art at the Univerisity of York and is a leading expert in the ceramics of the Islamic world.  He has published two books and numerous articles on the ceramics of Iran and Central Asia.


This talk and handling session, titled "Fragmented Beauty: An Introduction to Medieval Islamic Ceramics" will present the range of styles and techniques used for the production of vessels and tiles, and place them into their wider context.


Through the display of large-scale photos and a range of different objects, this event will present a rare opportunity to handle and discuss material dating from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries

 Sue is a costume designer of more than 50 years experience.  She has worked worldwide at Opera houses including Zurich, Dallas, Sydney, Beijing, Hong Kong, Paris, St Petersburg, Moscow & UK.  For theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Co, Royal National Theatre, West End and Broadway.  Born in Scarborough and now lives in Littlebeck, nr Whitby.

Kate Fenton

Kate Fenton has published seven novels since leaving the BBC, where she was a features producer on Radio 4. A former Deputy Chair of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, and Patron of the Whitby Lit Fest, she lives in the Esk Valley.

We had a wonderful evening, Mark Herman was on best form and shared with us tales of his working career

as a multi-award winning screenwriter and director, responsible for the feature films ‘Blame It On the Bellboy’, ‘Brassed Off’, ‘Little Voice’, ‘Purely Belter’, ‘Hope Springs’ and ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’, along the way working with such actors as Dudley Moore, Jim Broadbent, Colin Firth, Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaite and Sir Michael Caine.
